The Love Of God
I was sitting there that night, book in hand. I think I had read the same paragraph three times in a row. I couldn't concentrate. It wasn't that the book was boring, actually it was a very good one. It was me. My thoughts were elsewhere. As I looked out into the pitch dark night, something just came over me. I dropped the book on the table and began praying. I started thinking about how much God loved me even at times when "I" am the one who is distant when I blame the Lord for being the same way at times.
My prayer went something like this: "Father, you love me in spite of myself. Lord, there are times I'm hanging on to you for dear life trying to get through another day. Then, there are times I don't even attempt to hang onto you! Oh Lord, you never let go! Even in my joy, sadness, sorrow and gladness, regardless of which one, you are there! You never let go. You always love me! How could I not love you my Lord? How could I not love you?"
Maybe you've been there too, when an old concept becomes new again. How I needed to be reminded of the great immeasurable love of God in Jesus Christ. It was a moment I needed just then. I was reminded of the great song by Frederick M. Lehman that I treasure so much called, "The Love Of God." Some of the lyrics are:
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky
Those last lines really get to me each time I hear them. I personally don't think that any hymn writer has said it better. Think of the words. "Nor could the scroll, contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky." It doesn't get much better than that. So today, I'm not offering anything new. However, it doesn't always have to be new does it? It just has to be real! And...the love of God is "real", it is! So during every step of my life, the love of God is there. He doesn't change like we do! Let the lyrics of this song touch you today. Have a good week everyone and may the peace of Christ be with you all.

It's always an amazing thing to be broken before God and to be reminded of His grace, love and mercy. Thanks for sharing. It is a good reminder to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the neat post. I hope you have a great week too.
ReplyDeleteHey all,
ReplyDeleteI'm humbled at the comments. Thank you. I hope you know that there was no pride in writing such a post. In fact, it was a humbling that had to take place for me. If the post has been encouraging to any, the Lord truly gets the credit. With no false humility...I owe him everything!
Thanks all.
I love that hymn. And while I love many of the new songs that we sing in church today, it is a mistake for any church to cast aside the old hymns. I'm so glad that our church still sings them along with the choruses of today.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how that hymn would be written today since we write with keystrokes and electrons instead of ink most of the time.
Hey Randy...just wanted to let you know I mentioned you on my blog today!
